Knee Deep in Montana's Trout
Streams
by John Holt
ISBN: 087108886X 166 pages
softbound 9/96
(From Library Journal) "The Missouri
is a good river for a fly fisher." This is not a typical line in the
often rarefied world of fly fishing literature but, refreshingly,
this book is hardly typical. Twenty-five years joyously chasing fish
over the "best trout waters in the world" led Holt to describe the
fish, habitat, environment, and techniques most likely to produce
trout in 13 of his favorite Montana rivers. The anecdotes of his
varied experiences are written with self-deprecating humor, combined
with an extensive knowledge of riverine and watershed habitat. He
describes successes, mistakes, even embarrassments, which resulted
in a "steady learning curve that has applied to more than chasing
trout." He also notes that logging, mining, irrigation, and other
threats can destroy a river in less than a year. Highly recommended
for any fly fisher drawn toward Montana waters in dream or reality.
