| Northcentral Montana ( also known as Region 4 by Montana Department of
Fish Wildlife & Parks ) ranges from mountains to agricultural
plains. The western edge of Region 4 is bordered by the eastern
front of the Rocky Mountains; the eastern edge is primarily plains and
prairie. Region 4 has the most diverse plant and animal species in the
state. There are three Wilderness Areas in this region including
the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the Scapegoat Wilderness, and the Gates
of the Mountain Wilderness. Region 4 also has two National Forests,
the Helena National Forest and Lewis and Clark National Forest.
Much of the land in this region is private, making access more
difficult. Block management is a popular way to gain access to hunting
ground. Approximately 27% is public land in this region.
Northcentral Montana is home to a variety of big game species
including moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, black bear,
grizzly bear, white-tailed deer, mule deer, pronghorn, mountain lions, and
wolves. Region 4 offers excellent mule deer hunting and
pronghorn hunting. Elk, bighorn sheep, and goat hunting
opportunity exists in the mountainous areas. Moose populations
are generally low.
