| Northeast Montana ( also known as Region 6 by Montana Department of
Fish Wildlife & Parks ) is generally flat and rolling grasslands mixed
with deep ravines. This area has good hunting access with BLM
lands north of Glasgow and Malta, and CM Russell National
Wildlife Refuge north of Fort Peck Reservoir. The Bears Paw
Mountains are the only mountains in this region. Region 6 is the
least populated area of the state so hunting pressure generally is
low. Northeast Montana is home to a variety of big game species
including bighorn sheep, elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer, antelope,
and mountain lions. Region 6 offers excellent mule deer
hunting and antelope hunting. Ample opportunity for elk and
bighorn sheep exist in the Missouri River Breaks, but hunting is
limited to permit and the odds for drawing these coveted tags are
slim. White-tailed deer are found in river bottoms and
drainages. Region 6 offers great waterfowl and upland bird hunting as
well.
