| Northwest Montana ( also known as Region 1 by Montana Department of
Fish Wildlife & Parks ) is steep mountainous country and
heavily timbered. The eastern edge of Region 1 is bounded by
the Continental Divide which cuts through the Great Bears Wilderness
and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The "Bob" is home to the
highest point of elevation (8,890 ft) in Region 1. The other
two Wilderness Areas are the Mission Mountain and the Cabinet
Mountain Wilderness. All Wilderness Areas are non-motorized;
hunted only by horse or on foot. There are a number of guides
and outfitters that operate in these areas. Region 1 also has four
National Forests, including the Flathead National Forest, the
Kaniksu National Forest, the Kootenai National Forest, and Lolo
National Forest. Hunting access is generally good with the
many logging roads through these areas.
Northwest Montana is home to a variety of big game species
including moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, black bear,
grizzly bear, white-tailed deer, mule deer, mountain lions, and
wolves. The white-tailed deer is the most popular animal
hunted in this region. Success is good for black bears and
mountain lions with over half the harvested animals coming from this
region. There are a number of opportunities in this area for
bird and varmint hunting as well.
