| Southcentral Montana (also known as Region 5 by Montana Department of
Fish Wildlife & Parks) varies from large mountain ranges to the
foothills and flat rolling prairie. The Crazy Mountains make the
western border of this region, the Beartooth Mountains the
southwestern border, the Snowy Mountains the northern border, and the
prairies the eastern border. The Absaroka Range, the Pryor
Mountains, and the Crazy Mountains make up the bulk of public hunting
land in Region 5. The remaining land in the this region is
primarily made up of private farms and ranches. The Absaroka-Beartooth
Wilderness is the only Wilderness Area in this region.
Southcentral Montana also has three National Forests, including the
Custer National Forest, the Gallatin National Forest, and the Lewis
and Clark National Forest.
Southcentral Montana is home to a variety of big game species
including moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, black bear,
antelope, grizzly bear, white-tailed deer, mule deer, mountain lions, and
wolves. Mule deer and antelope are abundant in the
prairies with good white-tailed deer opportunity in the river bottom
areas, though often on private land. The mountains hold
hunting opportunity for moose, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goat,
black bear, and mountain lion. Elk hunting in this region is
limited by permit. Upland game birds and waterfowl opportunity
is rich in the area.
