| Southeast Montana (also known as Region 7 by Montana Department of
Fish Wildlife & Parks) is primarily prairie with rolling hills,
buttes, and badlands that are not found in other areas of the state.
Seventy-five percent of Region 7 is private land, but hunting
opportunity can be found with land owner permission and the Block
Management Program. Custer National Forest and CM Russell
National Wildlife Refuge are found in Region 7.
Southeast Montana is home to a variety of big game species
including elk, black bear, white-tailed deer, mule deer, antelope,
and mountain lion. Region 7 offers excellent mule deer
hunting and antelope hunting in the prairies. White-tailed deer can
be found in the river bottoms and drainages. Elk are found
along Fort Peck Reservoir in the CM Russell National Wildlife Refuge
but hunting is limited to permit draw. Black bears can be
found in the southwest corner of this region, and some mountain
lions along the southern edge. Region 7 is known for good
waterfowl and upland bird hunting.
