| Western Montana ( also known as Region 2 by Montana Department
of Fish Wildlife & Parks ) has large mountains with dense stands of
timber and open parks, it also has large valleys generally used for
ranching and farming. Region 2 has five different Wilderness
Areas including the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, the Welcome Creek
Wilderness, the Rattlesnake Wilderness, the Scapegoat Wilderness,
and part of the Selway-Bitterroot which is shared with Idaho.
All Wilderness Areas are non-motorized; hunted only by horse or on
foot. Region 2 also has five National Forests, including the
Bitterroot National Forest, the Deerlodge National Forest, the
Flathead National Forest, the Helena National Forest, and the Lolo
National Forest. Hunting access is generally good with the
many logging roads through these areas. Over 62% of Region 2 is
public land.
Western Montana is home to a variety of big game species
including moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, black bear,
grizzly bear, white-tailed deer, mule deer, mountain lions, and
wolves. This region is known to be one of the better
areas in the state for elk. There are a number of opportunities in this area for
bird and varmint hunting as well.
